The Sinn 556 and 856 have long been a favorite from the German watch brand known for tool watches with a distinct esthetic. Priced just above the $1,000 mark, the 556 at 37mm offers an entry level time and date watch with maximum versatility and readability. It’s all business but some Sinn fans demanded a bigger version, so at Baselworld 2018, Sinn delivered a 43mm case take on its basic three hander but added a tegimented (a steel treatment for durability) and took away the crown guards. The final touch: a red seconds hand, making the new Sinn 836 Tegimented the bigger, bolder cousin of its predecessors.
There’s something about the simplicity of this pilot watch design that makes it work so well as a watch you can wear in a wide range of settings. It’s utterly unpretentious and yet will still impress discerning watch guys. Also, of note, the date window is placed at 6 o’clock, which the Monta crew loves, of course, given our own models use that configuration.
When we met with the Sinn reps at Baselworld, we were happy to hear that they took customer feedback so much to heart. While there will always be a certain set that clamors for a sub-40mm watch edging on 36mm, the truth us the modern lust for watches in the 42-43mm range remains, and the success of the Sea-Dweller 43 is further proof that classics can be successfully reimagined in a larger case size. The 836 is powered by the ETA-2892-A2 movement and has anti-reflective coating on both sides of the sapphire crystal. Rated to 100 meters water resistance, you can feel secure wearing this watch on a beach vacation.
Sinn kept the case of the 836 Tegimented very thin for a sport watch at 10.6 mm. This goes a long way towards comfort and makes a seemingly large watch more manageable for a range of wrist sizes. It is available for $1,790 on strap and $2,050 on bracelet. Available from Watchbuys.com.
